A forecast tells you what conditions may develop. A pilot weather report, or PIREP, tells you what another crew actually encountered. For a student pilot, that distinction can turn a vague briefing into a sharper go/no-go conversation.
PIREPs are not a substitute for a complete briefing, aircraft limitations, or your instructor's judgment. They are timely evidence you can compare against the forecast, route, altitude, and experience level for your flight.
What a PIREP Tells You
A PIREP is an observation from an aircraft in flight. The FAA says pilots should promptly volunteer reports of conditions such as cloud bases and tops, flight visibility, precipitation, wind aloft, temperature, turbulence, and icing when useful.
The AIM's PIREP guidance also lists conditions that trigger FAA facilities to solicit reports, including low ceilings or visibility, thunderstorms, icing, moderate-or-greater turbulence, wind shear, and volcanic ash.
That makes a PIREP especially useful when it answers a question your forecast cannot settle: Is the cloud base where it was expected? Is the ride smooth at your planned altitude? Is haze reducing visibility along the route?
Decode the Core Fields First
Do not try to memorize every abbreviation before you use a report. Start with the parts that answer whether the information applies to your flight.
- UA or UUA: UA is routine; UUA marks an urgent report. The FAA's Aviation Weather Services circular explains that urgent reports include severe or extreme turbulence, severe icing, hail, low-level wind shear, volcanic ash, and other hazardous phenomena.
- /OV: Where the condition occurred. Read it against your route, not merely the airport nearest to you.
- /TM: The report time in UTC. A report can be accurate when filed and still be less useful as weather changes.
- /FL: The altitude or flight level where the pilot observed the condition. A report at 8,000 feet may say little about a planned flight at 3,500 feet.
- /TP: Aircraft type. It adds context, particularly for reports of turbulence and icing.
The remaining fields describe the weather: `/SK` for sky cover, `/WX` for weather and visibility, `/TA` for temperature, `/WV` for wind, `/TB` for turbulence, `/IC` for icing, and `/RM` for remarks. The FAA's PIREP element chart provides the full coding reference.
Read a PIREP in Context
Suppose you see a report of light turbulence at 6,500 feet, 20 miles west of an airport on your route, from 35 minutes ago. It is not automatically a no-go. It is one piece of evidence.
Compare it with the forecast winds, cloud layers, your planned altitude, the trend during the day, and the comfort level you and your passengers can accept. A nearby report at your altitude matters more than an old report far from your route.
Be equally alert to reports that conflict with the forecast. A lower-than-expected ceiling, reduced flight visibility, or unexpected icing can be a signal to pause, obtain more information, choose another altitude, delay, or cancel.
Use PIREPs During Your Preflight Briefing
Build a simple habit before every cross-country flight:
1. Check the time, location, and altitude before reading the weather details.
2. Match relevant reports to your departure, route, destination, and planned cruise altitude.
3. Look for a pattern rather than betting everything on one report.
4. Compare the reports with forecasts, NOTAMs, and the limits you set for the flight.
5. Discuss any mismatch with your CFI before departure.
This approach keeps a PIREP in its proper role: useful, real-world information—not a shortcut around sound planning.
When to File Your Own Report
PIREPs help the pilots behind you, and the FAA uses them in weather services and forecasts. Give a report to the FSS, ARTCC, or terminal ATC facility you are already communicating with.
The AIM says pilots should not be overly concerned with strict format or phraseology. Provide the location, time, altitude, aircraft type, and the conditions you observed as clearly as you can.
For a new pilot, a concise report of an unexpected cloud base, turbulence, haze, or wind is valuable practice in situational awareness—and valuable information for the next pilot making the same decision.
